Using the extension
Installing, the popup and the dashboard
How do I install Browser Monster?
It’s nearly ready. Join the waitlist and we’ll email you the moment it’s on the Chrome Web Store.
Which browsers does it work on?
Google Chrome, version 130 or newer, on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS. Other Chromium browsers may work, but we don’t support them yet.
Does it work outside the UK?
Yes, anywhere you use Chrome. It sees the trackers that load for you, wherever you are. A few extras are UK-specific for now, like the opt-out kit for UK data brokers and registers, and the public Index is checked from London, so it shows what a UK visitor sees.
The popup is empty or says “not a website”.
Browser Monster only sees pages you load after it’s installed, so reload the tab. Chrome doesn’t let extensions look at its own pages (such as chrome:// pages and the Chrome Web Store), so the popup shows your overall totals there instead.
Does it block trackers?
It’s a mirror first: it shows you what’s watching. If you want, you can block a tracker or a destination you choose from the dashboard. If a site stops working, remove that block or add the site as an exception.
Why does it ask for so many permissions?
Trackers can appear on any site, so it needs to see the requests every page makes. Extras like your history or other extensions are only requested when you use the feature that needs them. Every permission is explained in our privacy policy.
Can I see what the dashboard looks like without browsing first?
Yes. Open the dashboard, add #demo to the end of its address and reload. It fills with clearly labelled sample data.
Your data and privacy
What stays on your device and how to delete it
Do you see what I browse?
No. Everything is worked out and stored in your browser. The extension makes no server calls containing your browsing data and has no analytics.
How do I delete my data?
In the dashboard, choose “Delete history”. Uninstalling the extension also removes everything it stored. We never had a copy, so there’s nothing for us to delete.
Can I export my data?
Yes. In the dashboard, “Export my data” saves your findings as a JSON file on your computer.
Are my health or money interests shown to anyone?
No. Sensitive interest categories are hidden by default and never appear on a shareable report card unless you turn them on.
The Index and site owners
Grades, re-checks and corrections
How are sites graded?
We open a site’s homepage three times from London (doing nothing, clicking reject and clicking accept) and record what loads. The grade comes from what we observed. Read how we check.
I run a site and the result looks wrong.
Banners and ads change between visits, so a single check can miss things or catch something unusual. Email us with the domain and what looks wrong, and we’ll re-check it and correct anything that’s factually wrong. Send a correction request.
I fixed my site. How do I get a better grade?
Open your site’s page in the Index and choose “Check again now”, or email us and we’ll re-check it for you. The newest check is the one we show.
Can I use the data?
Yes, it’s open data under CC BY-NC 4.0. See licence, releases and the API.
